The difference between Training and Learning

Training is formal and "push" in style. This may be classroom or e-learning based.

Learning may be:

  • Pushed to the individual
  • The individual may pull information as required
  • Knowledge may be shared amongst a community

IT "training" should involve both styles which should be aligned to business needs (e.g. training needs analsys should look at wider needs not just that of the new system)

Learning can be more easily facilitated by the use of a few simple, cheap tools that allow collaberative working. Discussion group, forum and/or web-logging software tools can all be used for this purpose. Staff should be encouraged to set up online groups to share experiences and provide expert help to each other.
